Terms of use
Last updated: 31 July 2026. These terms apply to the SentenceWise apps for iOS and Android and to this website.
By using SentenceWise you agree to these terms. They are written in plain English on purpose; the plain meaning is the intended meaning.
1. What SentenceWise is — and is not
SentenceWise provides general information about the justice system in England and Wales. It is:
- not legal advice, and using it does not create a solicitor–client relationship with anyone;
- not medical, psychological or clinical advice;
- not financial advice;
- not an official government service, and not connected to His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service, the Ministry of Justice, the courts or any other public body.
No government department, public body, charity or support organisation mentioned in the app endorses SentenceWise. Names of services appear so you can find them, not because they are affiliated with us.
The app deliberately does not calculate release dates, predict the outcome of any case, or tell you what will happen in your individual situation.
2. Accuracy — and its limits
We work hard to make the content accurate. Guidance is grounded in official public sources, each topic shows its date inside the app, and the sources are current as at the research cut-off shown there. Rules, policies and services change, sometimes quickly, and there can be a gap between a change in the real world and an update to the app.
For that reason the app and this website are provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the content is complete, current or error-free, or that it applies to your circumstances.
It is your responsibility to verify anything that matters to you against your own official documents (court orders, sentence calculation sheets, licence conditions, letters from official bodies) and with a solicitor or other qualified professional before acting on it.
3. Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, AreYouFaster CIC, its officers, volunteers and contributors are not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of, or inability to use, the app or this website, or from reliance on their content.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the app or this website for any unlawful purpose;
- present the app's content as legal advice, or as an official government source, to others;
- attempt to interfere with, or misrepresent the origin of, the app or its content — for example by distributing a modified version under the SentenceWise name (see the trademark notice below);
- use the app's contact or reporting channels to send personal details about any real case, or abusive or unlawful material.
The app stores what you enter only on your own device; you are responsible for what you choose to enter and for your own device's security (the optional app lock can help).
5. Intellectual property and licences
- Application source code is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.
- Original SentenceWise editorial content (authored guidance) is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).
- Public sector information: the app contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Source organisations and document titles are identified within the application and its source register. Some material has been adapted and simplified by SentenceWise.
- Trademarks: the name “SentenceWise” (and the former names “Prison Pathways” and “Pathways”) as used by this project, and any logos or app icons, are reserved. The code and content licences do not grant rights to them. Forks must use a different name and icon, so that an app carrying this name can be trusted to contain the CIC's reviewed, un-tampered content.
6. Third-party services and links
Links to external websites and details of third-party services are provided for your convenience. We do not control them, are not responsible for their content or availability, and listing them does not imply endorsement in either direction. Opening a link hands over to your browser, outside the app.
7. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time — for example when the app gains features or the law changes. The current version, with its date, will always be published on this page. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
8. Severability
If any part of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, that part is treated as removed to the minimum extent necessary, and the rest of the terms continue in force.
9. Contact
Questions about these terms can be raised through the routes on the support page, or by email to admin@areyoufaster.com.
